How to play

  • Steer, hold the gas and brake to set the fastest time on each track. Hit restart (R) the moment a run goes wrong.
  • Gates split the track into sectors; each gate shows your time against your ghost, green when you are ahead.
  • Off the road or stuck? Back to the last gate (T) costs time but the clock keeps running.
  • Beat the medal times from the machine's own run: bronze, silver, gold and then the machine itself.
  • Take the Wheel: drive one sector from your ghost's exact spot. Beat it on a line it can follow to build your Ideal lap.
  • The Daily Track is the same for everyone today. Your best clean run there goes on the board.

Controls

  • Phone or tablet: Turn it sideways. Slide your left thumb on the steering strip, hold GAS and BRAKE with your right thumb. The round buttons go back to the last gate or restart.
  • Keyboard: ← β†’ or A D to steer, ↑ or W gas, ↓ or S brake, R restart, T back to the last gate, Esc pause.
  • Gamepad: Left stick steers, RT gas, LT brake, Y restart, X back to the last gate.

Tips

  • Brake before the hairpin, not in it: a car that slides loses more time than one that slowed down early.
  • Watch the preview ribbon in front of the car: red at its end means the line leaves the road.
  • Hit a jump straight and at the right speed so the car lands flush on the slope; a hard landing costs speed.
  • In Take the Wheel, the best sector is not the fastest one but the one you exit on the ghost's line, so it can follow.

About this game

Neon Time Attack is a time-trial racer on glowing stunt tracks. No rivals and nothing to crash into: just you, the clock and your ghost. Steer, hold the gas and brake at the right moment through hairpins, loops, jumps, boosters and slippery ice, then hit restart in half a second and do it again, a little faster.

Every track has four medal times. Bronze, silver and gold come from the machine's own best run, and the last medal is that run itself: beat it and you have beaten the machine. Gates split each track into sectors, and every gate shows how far ahead or behind your ghost you are, to the millisecond.

The twist is Take the Wheel. Pick any sector and the game puts you in your ghost's car at the gate before it, at its exact speed and line, with the ghost right beside you. Drive that one corner or jump faster than it did, leave it on a line it can still follow, and the ghost takes back the wheel and finishes from where you left it. That spliced lap becomes your Ideal, and the title shows how far your clean run is from it. Splices never count for medals or the board, so the Ideal is a target: now drive it clean.

Five lessons teach steering, braking, jumps, loops and the ghost. Then 35 tracks in five series climb from wide neon yards to narrow, wall-free redline tracks. The Daily Track is the same for everyone each day, with a twist like Mirror, Low-G or Turbo, and your best clean run goes on the leaderboard. The Weekly Cup adds up your best five days. Win medals to unlock 24 cars, and race a friend's ghost on the same device in a Ghost Duel.

Neon Time Attack plays free in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer, held sideways.
